Why Shoes?
Basic Needs
Walking is the primary mode of transportation in developing countries. Children often have to walk miles to get food, water, shelter or medical help. Having shoes enables them to walk comfortably on unpaved roads.
Education
Often, children cannot attend school barefoot because shoes are a required part of a student's uniform and/or attendance. If they don't have shoes, they don't have an education. Education is essential to children becoming self reliant and self-sufficient. It is a means for students to improve their futures, and empower themselves and their communities.
Health
The leading plague in developing countries is soil-transmitted parasites. Shoes prevent cuts and sores from unsafe roads and contaminated soil. Wearing shoes can prevent the penetration of parasites through open sores on the feet, which can cause serious infections that lead to fatal health conditions, social stigmas and the inability to work or attend school.
Podoconiosis
In Ethiopia alone, it is estimated that 11 million people are considered at-risk of getting podoconiosis, with between 500,000 and one million people affected today. The deformity is so severe that affected individuals become social outcasts in the community.
